Hyssop belongs to the Lamiaceae family โ€” the Mint family. Lavender, Peppermint, Rosemary, Basil, Thyme, Oregano and Clary Sage are botanical relatives.

Meet the Plant

Hyssop is a small, woody perennial herb with narrow green leaves and upright spikes of small flowers. The flowers are commonly blue to violet, although pink and white varieties also occur.

Like many members of the Mint family, Hyssop contains aromatic glands that produce volatile compounds responsible for its strong herbal fragrance.

Hyssop essential oil is generally steam distilled from the flowering aerial parts of the plant โ€” the leaves, stems and flowers above ground.

Hyssop vs. Other Plants Called Hyssop

The common name "hyssop" is used for more than one plant. The essential oil discussed on this page is specifically Hyssopus officinalis.

For example, Anise Hyssop is Agastache foeniculum. Although both plants belong to the Mint family, they are different genera with different chemistry and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Isopinocamphone

A monoterpene ketone commonly found in traditional Hyssop essential oil. It contributes to the characteristic aroma and is one of the main reasons this oil requires additional safety precautions.

Pinocamphone

Another ketone associated with Hyssop essential oil. Like isopinocamphone, it is especially important when evaluating the oil's safety profile.

ฮฒ-Pinene

A monoterpene with fresh, woody, green and pine-like aromatic characteristics.

1,8-Cineole

Also called eucalyptol. Some Hyssop oils contain meaningful amounts of this fresh, penetrating constituent familiar from Eucalyptus and Rosemary.

Limonene

A fresh monoterpene better known from citrus oils but also found in varying amounts in some Hyssop oils.

Chemistry lesson: Hyssop essential oil is not chemically identical from one plant or batch to another. Genetics, growing conditions, plant age, harvest stage and environment can all influence its chemical profile.

This is an oil where a batch-specific GC/MS report can be especially useful. Knowing how much pinocamphone and isopinocamphone are present gives you more information than the common name alone.

Historical & Traditional Uses

Hyssop has a long history as a culinary and traditional herbal plant in parts of Europe, western Asia and the Mediterranean region.

The aromatic leaves and flowering tops have historically been used in herbal preparations and as a flavouring ingredient.

Traditional herbal use has often centered on the respiratory and digestive systems. Hyssop preparations have also historically been used in washes, teas and other herbal applications.

Herb vs. essential oil: Traditional use of Hyssop tea or the whole herb does not establish that concentrated Hyssop essential oil can be used in the same way. Distillation concentrates particular volatile molecules and changes the safety considerations.

Today Hyssop essential oil is used much less casually than gentle oils such as Lavender because modern aromatherapy recognizes the importance of its pinocamphone-rich chemistry.

Respiratory-Style Aromatherapy

Hyssop has a long traditional association with respiratory herbal preparations. Its fresh, penetrating aroma also explains why it appears in some traditional aromatherapy blends intended to create a fresh, open-smelling atmosphere.

Because of its safety profile, however, there are often gentler oils available for this purpose, including appropriately selected Eucalyptus, conifer and Lavender oils.

Seasonal Aromatherapy

Hyssop's herbal aroma can combine well with conifers, citrus and resinous oils in seasonal diffuser blends, but conservative use is appropriate.

Massage

Hyssop may appear in traditional massage formulations, but this is not an oil that beginners need to use routinely on the skin. Alternative oils with simpler safety profiles are often available.

Home Aromatics

Small amounts can add a strong herbal note to botanical room blends, particularly alongside Lemon, Rosemary, conifers and Frankincense.

Everyday Uses

Hyssop is best viewed as a more specialized oil rather than an everyday beginner essential oil. Learning when not to reach for an oil is an important blending skill too.

Seizure & Neurological Safety

Hyssop's pinocamphone and isopinocamphone content is the most important safety issue to understand.

Hyssop essential oil is generally avoided by people with epilepsy, seizure disorders or a history of seizures unless its use is specifically evaluated by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

Do not confuse "not a hot oil" with "low risk."
A hot oil primarily raises concerns about skin irritation. Hyssop's major concern is different: its chemistry can create neurological risk at inappropriate exposures.

Children

Traditional pinocamphone-rich Hyssop is not a good beginner choice for children. Gentler oils with better-suited safety profiles can usually be selected instead.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Because of the safety concerns surrounding pinocamphone-rich Hyssop, conservative aromatherapy practice generally avoids its routine use during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless guided by an appropriately qualified professional.

Topical Use

Hyssop should never be casually applied undiluted. If it is used topically, formulation should account for the oil's specific chemistry and the person using it.

For a beginner blending course, it is more useful to teach students that Hyssop is a specialized oil than to give it the same routine 1โ€“2% recommendation used for gentler oils.

Inhalation & Diffusion

Use small amounts and diffuse intermittently rather than continuously. Avoid prolonged, concentrated direct inhalation.

Ingestion

Hyssop essential oil should not be casually ingested. Serious neurological reactions, including seizures, have been reported following inappropriate internal exposure to Hyssop oil.

Eating Hyssop as a culinary herb or using a traditional herbal preparation is not equivalent to swallowing concentrated essential oil.

Pets

Because Hyssop has a more complicated safety profile, conservative use around animals is sensible. Provide good ventilation, use only small amounts and allow animals to leave the room.
